UW Study Abroad Programs
Studying abroad can help you learn about engineering practices in other countries, develop your international skills and stand out in the job market. There are hundreds of foreign study opportunities, from UW Faculty-Led Programs to academic year and semester exchange programs.
During this summer study abroad program you will explore engineering and environmental issues in one of the world’s water-scarred nations.
Multinational Collaborations
Students can choose from hundreds of foreign study programs at UW Study Abroad, including the popular Exploration Seminars led by faculty members. Other program types vary, depending on the level of immersion into a foreign university and society that is desired. For example, if a student wants access to the full range of university courses available, an exchange or direct enroll program is likely the best fit.
The UW’s vast international network is an important part of the College of Engineering curriculum, enabling students to explore global issues through coursework, service learning, research and internships both on campus and abroad. Engineering faculty are also encouraged to lead international programs for their students.
Thomas Le, a Civil Engineering student from rural Washington, studied abroad in Rome on CEE’s Engineering Rome study away program this summer, gaining a new perspective on how structural arches were built and used in ancient Roman aqueducts. Make a gift to help more students like Thomas experience this opportunity.
International Projects
For students with an interest in international research and collaboration, many of our departments offer study abroad options that give them the opportunity to work closely with colleagues from different countries. These programs typically provide students with an industrial perspective and access to world-class facilities and expertise.
Students participating in these programs report that they greatly enhance their education, providing valuable career and professional perspectives and experiences. In addition, these partnerships often provide the necessary background for students to pursue their graduate research careers.
During this summer program you’ll take an intensive course in chemical engineering and process technology with up-to-date pilot plant facilities in Copenhagen, Denmark. The program also includes academic excursions within the city and visits to the nuclear waste encapsulation facility in Oskarshamn, Sweden.
This fall you’ll explore the history of engineering in Germany through academic excursions and classes with faculty and students at Notre Dame’s Rome Global Gateway. You’ll also visit EPFL in Switzerland, a world leader in high-tech engineering research.
ICAs
The College of Engineering offers a wide array of study abroad programs in locations around the world that allow you to explore your interests and build cultural and academic skills. Programs range from a few weeks to an entire academic year and cover most majors and minors.
Some programs are specifically tailored to your major and provide the opportunity to earn credit directly toward your degree. These ICAs are led by engineering faculty or other experts in the field of your study, and can help you develop an international perspective and advance your career.
All students participating in an ICA should work closely with their academic adviser to determine the best timing for this kind of experience, as it will depend on each student’s overall plan. The billable fees include those for education abroad advising, pre-departure guidance and orientation, program and course articulation, student support while overseas, reentry programming and UW transcript processing. The overall cost can also vary depending on the program type. Review each program’s Budget Sheet for more detailed information.
Co-ops
Depending on the location of your study abroad experience, you may be able to fulfill engineering curriculum requirements by transferring credits from the program. Students in all majors should consult with their academic advisors and Padnos Center for International Education before starting a study abroad program.
UW Study Abroad provides hundreds of foreign study opportunities to fit the diverse engineering student population, from Exploration Seminars, a one-quarter course led by a CoE faculty member during the summer between summer and fall quarters, to semester-length direct university exchange programs with more than 70 institutions worldwide. The College of Engineering also offers Intensive Courses Abroad (ICAs), a shorter, focused international experience for upper-level students during term break.
Most ICAs are engineering-related, but some satisfy gen ed requirements, including Global Perspectives and International Issues. Interested students can check out the wide range of available ICAs here.
